From being a shrub it grows to become a small tree. Can be grafted on a stem and then reaches a height of 10 m. It is a robust grower. The thick, leather, long-stemmed, oval to elongated oval leaves are bare and bright green in colour. In the autumn they turn yellow to scarlet red. The white flowers are in relatively long, pendulous flower clusters. When young, 'Cumulus' does not really bloom profusely; it never really does have an overwhelming amount of flowers later. 'Cumulus' has a fine root system close to the surface. It places little demands on the soil, prefers slightly calcareous soil that is not too wet. Very strong tree, resistant to wind and severe frost.
