An American cultivar with a conspicuously straight, upright central lead branch creating a pyramidal crown. The crown has a very dense branching. At a height of 20 m the spread is circa 10 m. The long and wide leaf is dark green and slightly larger than of the species A. saccharum. It turns to yellow orange hues in autumn. The leaf shape resembles that of A. platanoides. The difference being that the bruised leaf of the A. saccharum does not produce milky sap but a clear liquid. The pendent, yellow green panicles appear simultaneously with the unfurling leaves. The root system is shallow with many branching roots. Though the sugar maple thrives in many soils, a wet soil is unsuitable for healthy growth. The tree is intolerant to stagnating water. Sensitive to salt for icy roads. Intolerant to hard surfaces.
